Laxforsen's rock carvings

Through the unique rock carving finds made in 1998, the map of settlements for the hunting people in Västerbotten has been redrawn. The rock carvings in Laxforsen are dated to 4,000 years BC. and have been carefully examined and investigated i.a. by archaeologists from Umeå University. During the Swedish Forest Agency's inventory in the area, a number of new ancient remains were found, which indicates feverish activity in the area during antiquity.

Laxforsen is the rapids south of the village of Torrböle that has the greatest drop with its five meters. The river has cut deep into the landscape, which consists of hilly and wooded sandy land. Laxforsen is an exciting destination for the whole family.

The rock carvings can be found on the smooth slabs closest to the upper part of the rapids on the south side. They are not filled in so it can be difficult to distinguish where pictures are carved. Take your time and compare with the sketch on the right.
