TOSCA - OPERA FROM THE METROPOLITAN
Finally, the operatic classic Tosca by Puccini is back at the Met to be broadcast live to the Tibble theatre. Wonderful melodies performed by the grand orchestra to a moving story of power. Puccini's melodrama about an unstable diva, a sadistic police chief and an idealistic konstnär has both offended and captivated audiences for over a century. Critics have taken issue with Tosca's rather sordid subject matter, the intensity of the score, and the crowd-pleasing dramatic leads. But this has also made Tosca one of the few iconic works that gets to represent opera with the public. Tosca's popularity is further enhanced by a refreshing dramatic sweep, a driving score with overflowing melodies and theatrical cleverness, and the strong title role. Tosca premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900.
