Lidbergsgrottorna

About three kilometers northwest of the village Aspeå, along a forest road, you will find one of Nordmaling municipality's nature reserves. At Lidberget there are tunnel caves, giant cauldrons and bedrock smoke. The area is easily accessible and the terrain is not very difficult to get through. At the reserve border there are signs with information boards. The reserve was established in 1975 and covers 20 hectares of forest land.

In the reserve there are a number of beautifully ground crack caves, such as Stora Lidbergsgrottan and Marmitegrottan. The caves have been created by blocks that swirled around in the waves of the sea and worn against the rocks about seven thousand years ago.

Up on the mountain above Marmitegrottan, there is also a large and deep giant cauldron added during the last ice age. Other pots, shaped in the same way as the caves, are found along the foot of the mountain. The Lidberg reserve can also be seen as a sculpture exhibition, where the cut shapes of the rocks form konstverken.

There is a hiking trail in the reserve that is well-trodden and easy to walk. A good tip is to continue the path beyond Marmitegrottan to the large caves furthest south in the reserve. Feel free to make your own detours from the path for your own discoveries.
