Already during the Middle Ages, Nordmaling was an important hub along the Norrland coast. During the 17th and 18th centuries, there was a marketplace for trade here, which was divided between the citizens of Umeå and Härnösand, but also itinerant merchants stopped in Nordmaling for business. Nordmalingsvallen quickly grew into an urban area during the beginning of the 20th century and in 1922 it was announced in a royal letter that the town would become a municipal community. This meant the possibility of drawing up a city plan and appointing municipal committees. A couple of decades later, a higher elementary school was established, which eventually became a secondary school and an important stage in the development of a modern society. The same school building is now used by Artediskolan's high school. The name comes from Nordmalingssonen and the pioneering ichthyologist (fi skforskaren) Peter Artedi, friend and colleague of Carl von Linné. If you visit modern Nordmaling today, you will notice that with the proximity to the E4 and the Bothnia Line, the communications are good. Once inside Nordmaling, the gaze may first fall on Kungsstenen in the middle of the center, presented in the chapter on Öre älvdal, but what attracts the most attention is the beautiful medieval church. The church was built in the 1480s near the water, but the land uplift has made it now quite far down to the sea shore. The stately belfry was added during the latter part of the 18th century. Of the old church town that used to be here, there are still a couple of cottages left along Storgatan.
In the grave chapel next to the church, an interesting church museum has been created as well as a konstmuseum, dedicated to one of the area's konstnärer, Klas Engman from Ängersjö. Not far from there you will find the local history museum next to the old rectory, which is now a parish yard. This cultural treasure of old buildings - the white church with belfry and burial chapel and the faluröda parish courtyard with associated houses and sheds - forms a harmonious unity in the center of society. For those interested in nature, the proximity to the water makes Nordmaling particularly attractive. From the health center and the old farm school you can take the walking path to Kärleksudden. The place is popular with fans and young people, and the barbecue area is often used during the summer. The pedestrian and bicycle path Putte's road is also used by exercisers. The name comes from the initiator Sven-Erik Jogedal, who had the nickname Putte. The illuminated loop runs from Nordmalingskajen to Rödviken and is also maintained in winter. In Rödviken, the sea shore takes over. Nordmaling's four-star campsite is also located there. Within walking distance from the center you can swim in the sea!
