The origin of the royal stone

When King Gustav V and Queen Viktoria made their Norrland trip in 1921, they passed Nordmaling. This is what Gunnar Vesterlundh from Öre says:

Before this celebratory visit, an idea was born to raise a stone in memory of the event. Said and done. Money was collected and they went to work. The first stone, which was mined in Örsbäck, fell off in the middle during loading. Now it was barely time but a stone was to come. Probes were made and a good substance was found in Öre. This gave the landowner Augusta Eriksson a good negotiating position. She also requested SEK 200. It was a lot of money at the time.

The quarrying went well and loading began on July 2, 1921, a week before the royal couple's transit. The stone, which was estimated to weigh 8 tons, was loaded on an iron wheel cart. The transport to Riks 13 was arduous. The ground was not load-bearing enough so you did not put planks under the wheels. A contingent of men and women finally managed to tear the wagon a kilometer through the forest to Riks 13. Then Nanny Pettersson exclaimed: "If we female falcons had not had a heart, I would not have got it."

The Öre – Nordmaling section was towed by a crawler tractor from Olofsfors mill. The stone was completed on time but on the historic day the royal couple was really late. Among the spectators stood a tramp, impatient with the delay: "Come in, the king, let him not see me."

The royal stone stands today in central Nordmaling outside the church wall and is reminiscent of the royal couple's passage on July 9, 1921.
